Digital Signage in Retail

Thursday February 1, 2007

I remember seeing my first example of digital signage around 1987. It was a scrolling LED banner in a video rental store. The sign featured just a few programmable messages so if a consumer stood there long enough, he or she could see the store hours, newly released titles and may even learn about the weekly special.

Twenty years later and retailers have motion sensors triggering a display device when a customer picks up a product. A digital sign springs to life and a video plays about some related product the customer just can't live without. The evolution of retail signage is undeniable. Today's digital signage networks create a more dynamic way to get our message in front of customers and create upsell opportunities.

What was the first form of digital signage you remember seeing? Do you use digital signage in your store? Share your digital signage stories with other retailers in our Retailing Forum.
