An Early Start to Entrepreneurship

Friday August 18, 2006

In our household, where retailing is a common dinner table topic, the children are often exposed to business planning and marketing talk. It's no wonder that all three of the teenagers have begun their own enterprises. But it's not just our family.

At a time when many students are heading back to class, there is a large segment of teens and young adults starting their own businesses. Studies by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation show seven out of 10 high school students are interested in starting a business. This growing trend of young entrepreneurs has been aided by summer camps, clubs and classes aimed at teaching entrepreneurship.

Not only are more youngsters starting businesses, but read some of the Junior Achievement Teen Business Stories and you'll see that this group of go-getters are succeeding in business.

How old were you when you started your first business?

Children should be educated in the aspects of business and commerce at a ripe age. It is one way for them to realize the importance of commerce and marketing in the daily aspects of human life. Chinese children here in our community are trained by their parents as cashiers or shopkeepers, and later on become really successful businessmen. Some of the richest men in our country started out as humble entrepreneurs.
